Dudd / Missing Notches Interlocking puzzles by Stewart Coffin (STC #129 / 129-A) Dudd and Missing Notches are two closely related puzzles by Stewart Coffin. Both have the same objective: assemble six burr pieces into the configuration shown in the fit photo. Enthusiasts of interlocking puzzles will recognize this shape as the standard six-piece burr assembly, featured in many other puzzles, such as the Starter Burr Set. Dudd and Missing Notches have a twist, though: the pieces have confusing diagonal cuts that make the assembly very tricky and unusual. Coffin wrote: "The name Dudd is perhaps misleading (as well as being misspelled). The idea for this puzzle came from a similar one that Bill Cutler designed many yea earlier. His looks like an ordinary six-piece burr except that each piece has a pair of additional diagonal notches. Half of those notches are unnecessary, and so Dudd has only six, and is thereby much trickier to assemble. "[Missing Notches] is similar to Dudd but has ten diagonal notches itead of the required minimum of six, for added confusion. The idea behind the name was to suggest that I was trying to make the Cutler veion but left out two notches by mistake. Some got it, some didn’t." Printing Itructio Print copies of and as follows, depending on which veion of the puzzle you wish to make. You will need to use supports for , but the supports are necessary only for the tip of the diagonal at the base of the piece, so they should remove cleanly without scarring. (Make sure you use a support overhang threshold of less than 45 degrees, to eure that supports are not generated along the sides of the diagonal.) Dudd: Print six copies of . Missing Notches: Print two copies of and four copies of . It is also possible to print the following additional variants. Missing Notch: Print one copy of and five copies of . This variant was not mentioned by Coffin in AP-ART, but has been proposed by Coffin and Eric Fuller and made in wood by Fuller. Bill Cutler's original veion (easier): Print six copies of . All of the variants have essentially the same solution, but the variants with mixed pieces (Missing Notches and Missing Notch) are more confusing, and therefore more challenging.
